McLaren Vale sits about 45 minutes from Adelaide, which makes it the easiest food day on the Fleurieu to say yes to. Here is how we would spend it.
McLaren Vale is close enough to Adelaide that you can leave after breakfast and still be home for dinner, and a cooking class McLaren Vale day trip is one of the simplest ways to turn that short drive into a proper day out. This piece answers the practical bit: how long the drive takes, what to do with the hours either side, where the Saturday food is, and what we have running at our closest public venue to the city.
Spring is the time to do it. The vines are in leaf, the Willunga paddocks are green, the almond blossom has been and gone and the market tables start filling up with the first of the warm weather produce. You do not need a plan built to the minute. You need a rough shape, a bit of appetite and somebody sober behind the wheel.
How far is McLaren Vale from Adelaide, and how should you time the day?
Our venue at Hastwell and Lightfoot is about 45 minutes from Adelaide, which makes it the closest public venue we run to the city. That number matters more than it sounds. Forty five minutes is short enough that you are not committing your whole weekend, and short enough that a late start is not a disaster.
If you are coming for a Saturday, aim to be in Willunga early. The farmers market runs every Saturday morning and it is busiest, and best, in the first couple of hours. If you are coming for a Sunday, the day has a different rhythm: a slow drive down, a wander through the vines, then into the kitchen late morning.
A few things we would plan around:
- Drive time back. Build in a buffer. The Vale is the sort of place where you stop one more time than you meant to.
- A nominated driver. This is wine country, and you will be offered good things to taste all day.
- Lunch, or the lack of it. Our classes are hands in the bowl affairs and you eat what you make, so do not stack a long lunch on top of one.
- Cash and a cold bag. If the market is on your list, you will buy more than you planned.
Saturday morning at Willunga Farmers Market
Even if you never set foot in a class with us, this is the one thing we would tell a visitor to do. Willunga Farmers Market runs every Saturday morning and it is the anchor food event of this part of the Fleurieu. It is the place growers, bakers, cheesemakers and small producers actually stand behind their own tables, which means you can ask where something was grown and get a real answer.
How we work a market morning:
- Do a full lap before you buy anything. Prices, varieties and queue lengths all change between one end and the other.
- Buy the thing that is piled highest. Volume on a table in spring usually means it is at its peak that week.
- Ask one question per stall. How would you cook this at home? You will leave with better dinners than any recipe search gives you.
- Eat breakfast there. It is a market full of people who cook for a living. Trust them.
Once a month we run a free family butter session at the market: around 50 people shaking cream into butter, children with a parent, no booking and no cost. It is the easiest thing we run for a visitor to say yes to, and it is a very good ten minutes for small hands. If you want to catch it, check which Saturday it falls on before you drive down.
Things to do in McLaren Vale either side of a class
The Vale rewards a loose afternoon. Cellar doors are the obvious draw, and the ones worth your time are the ones where somebody pours for you and talks you through the ground the fruit came from rather than reciting a tasting note. Grenache does particularly well here, and spring is a good season to taste it.
Beyond the glass, the valley floor is flat and open, with vineyard rows running almost to the coast. Willunga itself is a short hop inland, with its old stone main street, and the beaches on the other side are close enough that a late afternoon swim or a walk on the sand is a reasonable way to finish before the drive home.
Our advice is to pick two stops, not five. A day in McLaren Vale spent rushing between bookings is a worse day than one spent sitting at two tables properly.
What we have running at Hastwell and Lightfoot
Every class at this venue starts the same way, with a glass of wine on arrival that is included in your ticket. After that you are rolling, filling, pressing or stirring, and you sit down and eat what you made. The venue also sells a drinks package at its own bar if you would like more alongside the meal.
Here is what is open for booking:
- The Ultimate Dumpling Making Experience, Sunday 25 October at 11:30, $125 per person. 14 seats left.
- Mastering Gnocchi from Scratch, Sunday 8 November at 11:30, $125 per person. 18 seats left.
- Sangria Sunday, Paella Masterclass, Sunday 6 December at 11:30, $180 per person. 24 seats left.
All three start at 11:30 on a Sunday, which is the part that makes the day trip work. Leave Adelaide mid morning, arrive relaxed, cook through the middle of the day, and still have the whole afternoon in the Vale ahead of you.
If you are travelling as a group, the dumpling class tends to be the one that suits mixed abilities best: pleating is forgiving and everybody ends up laughing at somebody’s first attempt. Gnocchi is the one people are most nervous about and most proud of afterwards. Paella is the big noisy one, a single pan, a lot of hands and a long table.
Come get your hands in the flour with us, a Sunday of good cooking, good Vale wine and a lot of laughs 45 minutes from town.
