Why This Recipe Works
This steamed fish with cashew cream and green papaya salad is fresh, elegant and surprisingly easy to prepare at home. The soft, flaky fish is balanced by a silky savoury cashew cream, while the green papaya salad brings crunch, herbs and brightness to every bite.
It is the kind of dish that feels refined enough for entertaining, yet simple enough for a relaxed lunch or light summer dinner. If you are looking for a healthy fish recipe that still feels special, this one delivers flavour, texture and colour in a beautiful way.
Best Fish to Use
Hake works beautifully in this recipe because it is delicate, mild and flakes nicely once steamed. You can also use other fleshy white fish such as snapper, barramundi, whiting or blue eye, depending on what is fresh and available.
The key is choosing a firm white fish that will hold its shape while steaming and pair well with the creamy sauce and crisp salad.
Why the Cashew Cream and Green Papaya Salad Work So Well
The cashew cream adds richness without making the dish heavy, giving the fish a smooth savoury base. The green papaya salad then lifts everything with freshness, crunch and a little sweetness, creating a balanced plate that feels light but satisfying.
This combination makes the recipe ideal for warm weather entertaining, Christmas tables, long lunches or any time you want a seafood dish that looks impressive without being complicated.
How to Serve Steamed Fish with Green Papaya Salad
Serve this dish as a light main course for lunch or dinner, or plate it up as part of a larger shared spread for entertaining. It pairs beautifully with chilled white wine, a crisp rosé, or simple steamed rice if you want to make the meal more substantial.
If you are hosting, the salad components and cashew cream can be prepared ahead, then finished with freshly steamed fish just before serving.
